Personal Description:

Hi! My name is Rían (she/her) and I'm an English Studies PhD Researcher. I have a Masters Degree in Medieval Language and Literature, and an Bachelor's Degree in English Studies, both from Trinity College Dublin. I'm hugely enthusiastic about the study of both English and History, and have a great deal of experience in the study and the teaching of both of them across a range of experience levels. It is my personal goal not only to provide additional support to students in these areas, but to instill the sessions I teach with that same sense of enthusiasm and passion for a subject. I am also openly trans, and so am very happy to work with LGBTQ+ students (as well as everyone else!). I'm super looking forward to being able to help you!

Tutoring Experience:

I have multiple years of teaching experience, having worked as Teaching Assistant in the Centre for Talented Youth Ireland across a wide age range (from 6 year olds to 17 year olds), primarily in subjects relating to English and the Arts. I am also currently a undergraduate teacher in Trinity College Dublin, where I teach 4 classes related to my research area. I have taught to a wide range of abilities and age groups, and have had a focus on smaller groups and dealing individually with students to ensure they have the attention they need.

Approach to Grinds:

My approach to grinds is fundamentally student oriented. The focus is on moving at the student's pace, and steering the classes towards the areas of the student's interest, to make sure they are engaged, interested, and doing what they care about. For the most part I take a grade-focused approach (where grades are a factor), and try my best to raise students at least a full letter grade by teaching to the exam. However, if such an approach doesn't work, I am more than capable of switching to a more zoomed-out, holistic view of the subject.
Additionally I am very focused on problem solving. Early on I aim to identify what the core difficulty areas are for a student, and then work to develop strategies to tackle those problems that will match a student's learning style.
Lastly, I think it is important to teach strong study skills in addition to teaching a specific subject, so that students will be able to support their own learning even outside of grinds.
