Tutoring Experience:

Over 15 years' experience of teaching English and Maths.

Experience of teaching English, English for Academic Purpose, ESL, ESOL, Essay Writing, Creative Writing and Maths.

The teaching of English involves the correct usage of sentence structure, punctuation, paragraphing and the use of genre specific language features. This in turn leads to the development of writing skills which address a range of academic texts, including: description, analysis, comparison, explanation, evaluation, persuasion and argument. English also involves the detailed reading of various texts and analysis books, plays and poems.

I have taught ESOL to foreign language students and business professionals who wished to develop their understanding of the English language. This included the teaching of English for Academic Purposes, Business English and pre-degree English courses designed to prepare students for University education.

I have taught Maths to students who ranged in age and ability, thus helping them to successfully pass their maths exam.

I have worked as a Learning Mentor supporting targeted learners through the transition process from school and/or college to university. This involved helping students with study skills, social skills and attitude to study in order to remove barriers to learning so the students could achieve their potential.

I also delivered City and Guilds' Employability courses. The courses were modular based and involved the successful completion of a portfolio. The modules included: team work, self-assessment and reflection, managing personal finance, investigating rights and responsibility, interview skills and job searches.

In addition to my teaching duties, I was an internal verifier for assessing portfolios and an exam invigilator, exam marker and also a member of the English standardisation team.

Approach to Grinds:

A friendly, one-to-one approach where I develop and monitor my students’ progression by using a fully developed Scheme of Work which will be personalised to the student's individual needs.

I aim to develop and deliver high quality outcomes for the learners by ensuring their learning needs are met. This is achieved by using a variety of learning materials and by using different methods of delivery, by doing so, I am able to create a simulating environment for the students whereby their learning is matched to their various learning styles. I have experience of teaching students with a variety of learning needs and learning styles. This includes experience of working with students who are visually impaired and students with dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.
