Personal Description:

Hi there my name is Niamh. I am a Wicklow native. I have a passion for teaching Science and Maths. I really enjoy working with people and helping them achieve their goals. The highlight of my work is when I see a student grow in confidence after grasping a difficult concept.

I completed a BA in Molecular Medicine from Trinity College Dublin in 2015 and graduated with 2.1 honours.
I was awarded with the School of Biochemistry and Immunology Junior Sophister Summer Award; Paid Summer Scholarship as a result of receiving the highest grade in my year.
My final research project received a 1st class honour and was published in Nature.

Tutoring Experience:

My career to date has allowed me to teach in a wide variety of ways. I have worked for an international software company, leading online webinars and informing international customers on ways to use the software.

Interested in pursuing teaching as a career, I joined a science outreach education company, after this.
Here I taught STEM third level topics to people aged 4 right up to adults, in the form of hands-on workshops. This role allowed me to take a complex concept ie.
electricity and be able to explain it to a wide variety of ages and/or abilities.

This wealth of experience has given me the opportunity to teach in libraries, primary and secondary school settings,
third level institutions, online webinars and private tuition. This diverse background has made it
clear for me that teaching is my passion and second level students inspire me the most. I will be completing my Masters in secondary education in September.

As I have been delivering hands-on STEM workshops for the past 2 years I have a plethora of experiments and novel ways to teach the students to really
engage them.

Approach to Grinds:

I have been giving grinds in Maths and Science for the past 7 years and my approach has always been student focused.

If I have a student who has taken command of their studies and knows their weak points, I will focus on these until the topic has been mastered. More often than not, the student is unclear of their weak areas so I will usually do an assessment to can a gauge on their skills.

I am very systematic and I know what topics need to be covered to get people through their exams and to excel for the top grade.

With Zoom I regularly use:
- The whiteboard (to write out the method just like I would in a classroom). The student can also write on the white board to answer.
- Screenshare: I share my laptop screen to show some textbook, exam paper, diagram, any teaching aid.

I want to ensure my students are engaged in the grinds so I react to their interests to try and tailor the classes using scenarios that they might deal with in their daily life.
