Personal Description:

Hi, I'm Martin, I am a data analyst and social science researcher working in the public sector.

Previously, I have 8 years experience of teaching at third level and over 15 years experience of giving grinds for both second level and third level. Knowledgeable in almost all areas of undergraduate maths, statistics and data analysis including statistical programming. I have a first class honours degree in Maths. A taught masters in Financial and Industrial Maths, a research masters in Maths Education and a first class honours Higher Diploma in Data Analytics.

In addition, I taught CPD to teachers when the curriculum was introduced in the early 2010s, so have insights into all aspects of the teaching dynamic of maths at second level.

My rates are negotiable, I understand many people are struggling financially in the current climate. I will provide discounts for group rates and if students commit to a certain number of grinds I can provide a discount at the end of year/semester.

******Third-level data analysis projects******
In addition, in my professional capacity I work with public sector projects involving big data, statistical programming, machine learning and data management. Available to help 3rd level students with statistical content of related projects. I'm competent with R, Python, Tableau and Power BI. Also dabble in GIS, and au fait with QGIS and have expert knowledge of integration of GIS functionality into Tableau and to a lesser extent Power BI. Don't be afraid to ask if you're working on a college project, if I don't have the specific knowledge to help out I'll say.

Tutoring Experience:

Currently work as data analyst and researcher in the public sector.

Previously, 8 years experience at NUI Maynooth as a tutor and occasional lecturer. Involved in tutoring all levels of undergraduate students in addition to students with weak backgrounds. Taught second level teachers CPD module on statistics when Project Maths curriculum was introduced in early 2010s.

6 years experience working in the drop-in maths support centre in Maynooth University, where maths help was administered in a friendly and safe environment, similar to a one-to-one grind. Have nearly 2 decades experience giving grinds at JC, LC and third level.

Approach to Grinds:

I would meet with the parent(s) and child (or student if third level) and discuss what they want to achieve from the grinds. We would then come up with a short term plan, maybe to meet 2 or 3 times and then discuss again how we feel we're getting on. Some students wish to build on a good level of understanding, others are struggling and need help with the basics and I adapt my teaching methods based upon these scenarios.

I constantly converse and discuss the approach with the student too, their input is important and in my experience, if they feel they've a say in how we approach the learning they're more likely to engage.

In terms of teaching, I always aim to approach it from a conceptual and understanding base, I do not teach using rote methods. However, all the teaching I do involves solving problems and doing mathematics and I strongly believe that it is possible to learn maths without using overly by rote methods.

I also work on basic study skills and exam preparation with students. I also advise students on what work they should be doing between grinds, though whether I give homework or not depends on the individual needs of a student.

**Obviously in person classes are not possible at the moment, this can be challenging as without tablets, etc, it can be difficult for both teacher and student to write maths. This can all be discussed at the beginning and a student-centric approach can be decided and refined as grinds progress.**
