Personal Description:

Hello, my name is Macdara, I'm currently a student-teacher completing the Post-Primary PME programme with Hibernia College. My subjects are Biology and French and I have completed a BSc. in Biomedical Science and H.Dip in Arts (French) with UCC. Apart from being a language and science buff, I have a huge interest in art, running, cycling and I am an avid cook and reader. I am also a bass chorister with UCC Singers and Madrigal 75.

Tutoring Experience:

AU-PAIR | FAMILLE RENARD | LA ROCHELLE | (JUNE – AUGUST 2019)
● I lived in France for three months with the Renard family gaining invaluable immersion in the French language. I provided English lessons to the children and supervised their homework. Here, I also developed key skills such as intercultural competence, perseverance, independence, and self-motivation and discipline.

ENGLISH TUTOR/CAMP LEADER | LINGUE SENZA FRONTIERE | (JUNE – JULY 2017/2018)
● As a camp tutor, I planned and taught an immersive English language program: including class lessons, outdoor activities and writing a script for a theatrical production to Italian students in five CLIL method camps held in primary schools in Vigevano, Porlezza, Bobbio, Travo, Carmagnola and Sestri-Levante in Italy. When promoted to camp-leader I was responsible for managing the team of tutors and liaising between the staff in the school, the student’s parents, the students and the other tutors.
PEER-ASSISTED STUDY LEADER | CIT | (SEPTEMBER 2016 – MAY 2017)
● Volunteered with CIT - trained and worked as a (PALS) study and peer mentor for first year biomedical science students.
ENGLISH GRINDS TUTOR | UCC SVP SOCIETY | (SEPTEMBER 2015 – MARCH 2016).
● Volunteered with Saint Vincent de Paul providing English grinds to Leaving Certificate students in St. Josephs Community Centre, Mayfield, Cork.

Approach to Grinds:

In terms of the French language classes, I would begin by establishing fluency level in the student's oral, aural, and written French, their desired learning outcomes for the grind, what has been covered to date in school, and what they would like to focus on in the grind to support their learning in class and to ensure they can flourish when it comes to exam season. In the class, we would cover both examination questions and use various resources to target and address the more challenging topics within their course.

From the science point of view, I can cater to both Junior and Senior Cycle students. We will breakdown the Junior Cycle Science course and then proceed to review the more problematic areas particular to the student and then finally look at and drill how these areas are examined in the paper. For Leaving Certificate students, it is an intensive crash-course of the biology curriculum. In general, the Leaving Certificate course introduces biology as the study of life, the structure and functions of the different organ systems of the body, the cell, and an investigation into organisms. Once we have covered all the bases we can delve further into ironing out the tougher parts of the course and provide the student with some helpful memory aids and plenty of practice to ensure they will be ready and confident for their exams.
