Essay Writing / Study Skills
I am an MSc Neuroscience student studying in Trinity College Dublin with a keen interest in passing my passion for science onto new students who may need a bit of extra help. I have a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology from UCD. The advantage of studying science in UCD is that in our first two years the degree was very broad, giving me an overview of every biological subject offered. In second year, I focused on Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience, and then chose pharmacology as my specialty. I loved pharmacology as it did not confine me to learning one specific area. Pharmacology branches throughout all the areas of biomedical science including biochemistry, genetics, neuroscience and physiology. After my undergrad, I have now continued my education by studying Neuroscience, hoping to combine my two degrees to work in Neuropharmacology when I am done. I have a true passion for science, in particular biomedical science, and I hope to pass this onto other students.
I have worked with coaching children in sports for over eight years, so I am used to explaining things to children. I am someone that my peers would go to if they needed help with something they did not understand, as they said that I was good at explaining difficult information in a way that was understandable. I break the information down to allow a basic understanding of the topic before building on this foundation with more difficult information or topics.
Approach to Grinds:
My approach to the grinds would be to ensure the student truly understands the topic rather than just learning off phrases/definitions. This is because it is easy to forget learned off definitions under the pressure of an exam but if you truly understand the logic of something you can draw on this understanding to help you through tough spots in exams. My own study revolves around this method and I particularly like the use of mind-maps and testing yourself as study aids. For Junior/Senior cycle grinds, I would also make us of past exam papers, using them as guides for our grinds.
