I'm a Galway native; born, bred and happily stuck here for the last 25 years. I grew up in the west of the city in the Knocknacarra area, went to St. Endas school.
With regards to my academic background:
I recently graduated graduated from the University of Cambridge with a Masters in Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning. Previous to this I studied a Higher Diploma in Applied Mathematics at NUI Galway. My undergraduate degree was in Physics and Applied Physics at NUI Galway also. I received a First Class Honours degree in my HDip and BSc (where I also finished at the top of my class).
I am now an Academic Collaborator at the University of Cambridge working on continuing the work done in my masters thesis. I am currently looking for a PhD in Aritificial Intelligence to begin next September (2021).
Currently conducting grinds for Leaving Cert students in Higher Level Mathematics.
Approach to Grinds:
I believe in an approach that focuses on real understanding rather than memory tricks or rote training. Mathematics and Physics are subjects that are learned incrementally, building on foundations. I feel it is important to begin by identifying which concepts are missing from your foundations and building from there. Once we know what these are we can go about filling these gaps in your understanding, using conceptual and practical questions to test how well we have done. Everyone has a teaching style that suits them best so I make sure to adapt to what you need.
Mathematics and Physics are beautiful subjects, with deep meaning and I approach teaching with the hope that the same wonder and excitement is passed on to the person I am teaching. Speaking as someone who hated physics and mathematics in my Junior cycle (and even physics up to my Leaving Certificate), I understand how frightening and even boring these subjects can be when they have been taught incorrectly. I don't believe that anyone is incapable of understanding either, just that they haven't been given the right start.
Having taken 6 years of university exams including a very demanding year at Cambridge University, I also like to pass on exam techniques that I have found success with as this is what matters most at the end of the day.
