Information About Isobel - Rosslare tutor
This is how a referee rated Isobel:
I am currently pursuing an MEng in Engineering at a Russell Group university in the UK. I sat the Leaving Cert in 2018 and obtained a H1 in Maths, Physics and Applied Maths. I am offering grinds in these 3 subjects for the Leaving Cert.
I am patient and passionate about all thing science/ maths related!
I am available throughout July 2019 to give grinds and, if desired, crash courses in a particular topic.
For the past academic year, I have been volunteering at a local school as a STEM tutor for two hours per week. In this role, I assist students in understanding concepts and practise questions to solidify knowledge and understanding. I have found this role to be very fulfilling and rewarding.
In school, I volunteered at the weekly after-school maths club.
Approach to Grinds:
Firstly, I try to gauge what the student understands and where the gaps in the knowledge are. I do this by asking questions and pushing the student to establish their knowledge of a concept. The use of hypothetical situations can be useful here.
Secondly, I explain a concept/ theory to the student. This I try to do by using plenty of examples and interaction from the student. I am not a fan of lecturing to a student! For example, I may ask questions such as: 'So, why is that?' or 'What do you think the result of that is?'.
Then, the majority of the grind consists of questions for the student to do. Perhaps answering orally or on paper. The questions would be from textbooks or past papers. In this way, it is possible to find out which parts of the explanation given the student has understood and which areas I need to explain in a different way.
Penultimately, I find it useful to summarise and consolidate what has been covered in the grind as well as how it fits into the course.
Finally, I will give the student questions/ a worksheet to complete and potentially a task to do - such as 'Watch this YouTube video and tell me about it next week' or 'Make a summary sheet about this topic'. I find these tasks to be useful as I find a little and often works best in understanding a concept. If grinds are a week apart it is common for the student to have, naturally, forgotten aspects of the content.
Every session will be different depending on the student, their knowledge and their style of learning. I tailor each session to that student in every possible way - no two students are the same so no two sessions should be.
