Personal Description:
A current student at Trinity College Dublin, with a consistent academic background, having obtained 578 points in the Leaving Certificate, including a H1 in Irish. Selected as Cinnire (camp leader) in one of Ireland's most prestigious Gaeltacht summer schools, serving three consecutive years, teaching and facilitating through the medium of Irish. Places a strong emphasis on encouragement and positive reinforcement with respect to improving individuals' confidence with the language.
Tutoring Experience:
As a Cinnire (camp leader) in Colaiste Chamuis, I spent three weeks teaching Irish, to secondary school students. My main goal was to enrich each pupil's learning experience. I want to demonstrate that learning a new language can be exciting and fun. I aspire to replicate this positive environment in my lessons.
During my secondary school education, I helped many of my friends and younger siblings with Irish. This included conversation practice for the Irish Oral, introducing them to new vocabulary and helping them with homework assignments.
My other experiences with teaching includes being hockey instructor for two consecutive years, coaching the younger years in my school. This role involved demonstrating techniques and rules, while simultaneously developing the individuals confidence and generating a passion that will inspire the players.
Approach to Grinds:
I opt for a student-centred approach, based on the needs of the individual. I tailor my tutorials to the student’s aims, be that working towards upcoming examinations or developing longer-term understanding. I balance working through parts of the course that the student is struggling with, with maximising marks in areas in which they perform well, in order to achieve good understanding and top marks.
I understand the vitality of a positive mindset in regard to learning a language. As I learned Gaeilge in school and am now fluent, I have learnt I have a love for learning and enjoy sharing that understanding with others to help them meet their goals in an encouraging and supportive way. In my lessons, I begin by speaking to the guardian of the student and asking the level and confidence of the student's Irish and also noting which elements of the language they may be struggling with in school. I then proceed to a friendly introductory lesson with the student to get to know them and gage their level of Irish. From this, I can devise a plan for the upcoming lessons.
