I am a post-primary French and Geography teacher based in Raheny with a passion for languages and helping students achieve their full potential. I currently teach in St. Josephs CBS, Fairview. My masters thesis was on the subject of improving listening skills for post-primary student and enabling students to improve their listening skills is one my my key strengths.
I currently teach all year groups and all abilities in St. Josephs CBS, Fairview. I have taught in Mount Temple and Pobailscoil Neasáin as part of my teaching placement. I was paid to teach a French leaving certificate ordinary level class in Pobailscoil Neasáin and I have taught English in a French school (Lycée de l'Albanais). In terms of grinds I have been doing both Junior and Leaving certificate grinds for three years now with a wide range of abilities and challenges. In addition I have experience teaching private summer classes with students in first and second year.
Approach to Grinds:
The first session with a student is always free of charge were I give assess the students strengths, weaknesses and expectations. I use this session to plan the following sessions with the student to maximise their potential and make sure we are both on the same page. If the student is starting from scratch it will be an introductory lesson to the language and my teaching style. Each plan will differ from student to student but will consist of exercises aimed to improve their weaknesses and build on their strengths. Often this consists of improving the students vocabulary generally with an authentic French texts at the same time as working on one of the four skills: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written skills and spoken interaction. There will also be times when in-depth teaching of grammar is needed, at this point I make sure that the lesson is grounded in an authentic text, to the point and involves lots of useful practice.
A significant part of the sessions will involve "exam strategy" where I advise the student on strategies to make the most of their abilities and time during the exam. I try to foster independence in the student by scaffolding their learning and as we get closer to the exam slowly removing these aids. A core component of each of my lessons is providing constructing and realistic feedback, bearing in mind the students ability.
I have experience of delivering classes through online platforms such as google classroom, edmodo, skype and zoom. As with most tutors I do provide all my notes to students if they wish.
