Personal Description:

I am originally from Co. Limerick, and am now married with two children in Co. Sligo.

Tutoring Experience:

I am qualified as a second-level teacher, and have experience of teaching for three academic years. I also have a qualification to teach English as a foreign or second language and experience in doing so (both in a secondary school and in language school summer programmes). Through my own work and volunteering in various activities over the years, I have had experience of working with people of all ages, from young children to adults.

I am registered with the Teaching Council and am Garda vetted. I have experience of being a trainer in the area of Child Protection, and take this responsibility with the utmost seriousness.

Approach to Grinds:

My desire is to help learners (of whatever age or stage) to reach their potential, and believe that motivation is key to that. All of us know that it is much easier to learn something we are interested in, and so I hope to help students see the importance and relevance of their subject(s). I am convinced that learning is not just about knowing information to pass a test, but is a life-long process of formation as a person. For me, successful teaching results in learners developing their own hunger to learn, and being inspired to go further themselves as confident and independent critical thinkers. I hope to create a positive and warm atmosphere, where the learner is treated respectfully as an individual. In such an atmosphere, I want learners to feel that they can ask questions, get clarification, and explore aspects of the subject which interest them in greater depth.

My approach to grinds is to be student-centred. I try to do this by being relevant to the needs and interests of the learner, with teaching adapted to their level of ability, and aims for the future. My first aim is to discover the student's current knowledge and ability. After exploring their goals with them, we can work together to create with them a plan for how to proceed based on their needs.

Practically, I use a variety of teaching and learning strategies to provide an interesting and engaging experience. I make a special effort to explain and illustrate concepts and topics in a way that is easy-to-grasp and relate to experience. Knowing how to approach personal studying, exams, and essay writing is an essential skill, which I believe we can all improve in. Therefore, I aim to encourage learners in this (especially by sharing techniques I have found - and continue to find - helpful as a learner).

During the Covid-19 pandemic, I am available to provide online tuition, and have lots of experience in using ZOOM and Microsoft Teams for video-conferencing. If you feel that I can be of assistance to you, please get in touch, and I will endeavour to get back to you quickly to make arrangements which work for you.
