This is how 2 referees rated Conal:
I am currently an undergraduate student teacher in DCU studying Physical Education and Mathematics. A lot of my college course, from a pedagogy perspective, is based around novel and interactive ways to teach mathematics through discovery methods. Up to date with all changes to the curriculum in recent years.
I have 3 years of experience of teaching maths grinds at junior cycle and senior cycle. I have completed 2 teaching practices at this point. My college course is a combination of maths courses e.g. Linear algebra, calculus etc. and modules about teaching methods etc.
Approach to Grinds:
Approach is always flexible and based around identifying what can best help the student as an individual.
Generally the most successful approach I have taken consists of;
Identifying a part of the course a student would like to improve at,
Having them attempt an exam question whilst probing and asking the student to explain their thought process,
Identify any gaps in their understanding or learning within the topic through assessment for learning in probing etc,
Where appropriate provide notes, explain processes and complete demonstrations,
Provide real world examples to help retention where possible.
Then the student completes some exam questions at home and they are corrected at the next grind lesson where learning can be assessed further.
When a student wants to cut straight to the point and learn how to do something rather than how/why it works I cut right to the point for them
I also try where possible to build cross curricular links within mathematics as most exam questions in recent years contain several pieces of the curriculum within them.
