My name is Caoimhin and I am passionate about teaching! I have a BCL (Law with Philosophy) and a LLM (Masters in Law - International Human Rights) from University College Dublin. I achieved excellent results in each aspect of both of my degrees in large part, I believe, due to the way I look at subjects. Rather than simply reading the book and trying to memorise topics I like to challenge the topics that I am learning, this requires a level of understanding which allows me to excel in exams. This approach can also make studying far more enjoyable, as it becomes a personal challenge to understand and improve the topics rather than simply attempting to get a good grade in the exam. I am currently a PhD student in UCD.
I have significant experience as a tutor working for University College Dublin in the Law School, the Philosophy School, and the School of Arts. The subjects I have tutored include Criminal Law, Contract Law, Existentialism and Humanism, and Study Skills. This undergraduate level tutorials ranged in size from 10 to 25 students. I know from experience that not every student learns in the same way, as such, these tutorials require me to adapt my teaching to best suit the students in each class. As a tutor I was also responsible for correcting mid-term assignments, essays, and final exams. Through this experience I have a great understanding of what examiners are looking for which can be a great help to students.
I have recently completed the Cambridge-ESOL CELTA qualification which qualifies me to teach English as a second language to both adults and children. I am currently teaching in the DCU Language Services Junior School, as well as providing a number of private grinds.
I also teach a Transition Year Evening Studies Legal Class once a week in Blackrock College. I am responsible for choosing the topics covered in the course and for ensuring that each student understands the material. While presenting challenges not present in third level tutorials, this work has helped me to develop as a teacher and better understand the needs of students at different levels of education.
Approach to Grinds:
My approach to the grinds I provide will vary on the student I am working with. Each student has their own way of learning and processing information. This can be a reason that some students find it difficult to understand a subject or topic in a classroom as their style of learning does not match the teacher's style of teaching. The challenge for me as a tutor is to adapt my teaching to suit the individual. I am particularly interested in helping students find new ways of thinking about a subject which allows them not only understand it but feel confident in their ability to excel in their exams.
