I finished my undergraduate degree in DCU in 2013 and completed a Maths PhD in Duke University in 2019. After working as a stock market trader I have returned to education to work as a tutor in DCU.
I have been tutoring privately for 9 years from Leaving Cert to Master's level classes, have lectured at the university level for 5 years, worked as a university teaching assistant for 2 years, and worked for 1 year as an Applied Maths secondary school teacher while still an undergraduate in DCU.
Approach to Grinds:
My approach varies mostly depending on the time I have with the student. If we meet early on, I usually recommend using tutoring time to reinforce lessons learned in that week of classes, so that each week the student goes to their regular classes will a good foundation. For students that I meet closer to exam time, I adopt more of a triage approach, finding out which topics the student is least comfortable with and addressing those issues even if it means teaching the topic from scratch. I have also tutored in situations where I was the student's main or only source of instruction.
In all cases I think it's important to gauge early on how the student most easily learns new information. For example, some students prefer to learn by doing, whereas some need to understand the method in the abstract before they are comfortable moving on. I've had students want to explain material back to me to be sure they had a good enough understanding. I've had to dabble in both geometric (more visual) and algebraic (more abstract) explanations of certain subjects to see which the student identified with more. In short, in my time teaching I've taught hundreds of students and each one is different. My initial aim is always to understand the student's way of thinking, from there everything else follows.
