Fully qualified, Garda vetted primary teacher of 10 years experience available to travel. I am very passionate about promoting creative and critical thinking, curiosity and intrinsic motivation in each individual child, empowering them to become more autonomous learners. I firmly believe that it is the role of the teacher to create the optimal conditions for learning and to help children to recognise mistakes as learning opportunities. I believe that my broad background in teaching children and adults has helped me to sharpen my skills in areas such as planning, enthusiasm and motivation for learning and assessment as well as providing opportunities to focus on learning as process rather than outcome.
I believe in the universality of creativity across all disciplines, each of the creative arts has the ability to inform and inspire other areas of the arts and STEM subjects.
Over the past 10 years of my teaching career, I have had the privilege to work in several settings within the primary education setting from whole class to small groups to 1 on1 tutoring ranging from junior infants to 6th class. In addition to mainstream primary school teaching, I have spent summers teaching Irish in gaeltachts to trainee teachers and secondary school pupils. I have taught music, specifically cello, musicianship and choral and orchestral conducting for Sistema Scotland in Aberdeen and in Galicia in Spain.
Approach to Grinds:
Primarily I like to ensure that the child is comfortable throughout the session - a comfortable mind creates the best conditions for learning. Understanding that the child may be tired after a day's work at school, I like to work with the child's attention span while continuing to either challenge or reinforce material. I like to involve play in the lessons where appropriate without sacrificing progress.
Throughout my teaching experiences I have developed a passion for instilling and cultivating a growth mindset through lessons, encouraging children to rethink their limitations and to help them understand the importance of frustration in learning. I always encourage children to consider the power of 'yet' in lessons - I can't do this… yet. Through helping children over come negative mindsets and barriers to learning, I believe that children can become more resilient and reflective learners.
