I am a mechanical engineer, about to start my masters in mechanical engineering. I have a good understanding of maths because of my background in engineering but usually focus on junior cert/primary students in order to provide adequate time for each student. I can work with leaving cert students too if requested. I also attended an all Irish school and have a love for the language.
I taught Irish In my later secondary school years and have casually taught/volunteered maths classes in the last few years but not as official grinds. I then started giving maths grinds to level 7 engineering courses which would be very similar to leaving and junior certificate maths in parts so I am very comfortable teaching those topics to students that naturally struggle with maths as it can be hard to grasp.
Approach to Grinds:
I think the best way to teach a student is to help them understand the world of each subject rather than specific questions. I aim to teach them how to think about problems rather than focus on each individual question and getting them to effectively learn everything off. I want them to be able to apply what they’ve learned to any situation in the subject and work it out using the tools they have been taught. I’ve noticed both from my own schooling and people I have taught that this isn’t focused on in schools due to class size, restrictive time and resources so a lot of the time students can progress massively just by changing their thought process.
