Information About Aoife - Galway tutor
This is how 3 referees rated Aoife:
I'm a young female teacher located in the city of Galway who has a passion for science and biology, and with working with young people. I graduated from NUI Galway after completing a post-graduate degree in education, and previous to that a bachelor of science degree. In the classroom, I approach learning in a creative and fun manner in the hopes that it inspires and gives students an appreciation for the subject and how it relates to the world around them, a direction the syllabus is now shifting towards, as well as promoting a judgement-free and trusting learning environment.
Have 2 years (2015-17) experience teaching junior cycle science and senior cycle biology in classroom setting and to students of mixed learning abilities and group sizes. I was involved in the marking of state exams for junior cycle science this summer (2017 and 2018), and thus have a detailed understanding of the marking scheme and how marks are allocated, as well as the common mistakes students make/ areas students answer poorly/struggle with. In regards to grinds, I have given individual-based sessions throughout the 2017/18 academic year and am looking forward to helping students achieve their goals once again. Finally, I have experience teaching and assisting 2nd year university students with microbiology labs in regards to the experiments and write-ups, of which took place in a smaller group setting, which can be applied to the practical elements of the syllabus.
Approach to Grinds:
Before the first session, I like to talk with the parent or student via phone call in order to get a better understanding of what areas in science or biology the student is having difficulty with or would like to revise/what they have already covered in school with their teacher. By doing so, it will allow us to begin straight away and make the most of our time, as well as allowing me time to prepare learning materials, e.g. notes, handouts, setting up the student's online learning resource where they can access the learning material, etc.
A plan will be devised for each lesson, including learning outcomes (goals we will work towards in every lesson), and will recap and apply what has been learned via past exam questions/worksheets. Finally, work will be given to be completed for the next session, of which will be corrected together, or an online quiz may be set instead (depending on whether the student has internet access).
Handouts will be given to help summarise key points of information for every topic covered, and students should bring a refill pad/copy and pen for taking additional notes and/or attempting questions. Electronic copies of notes can also be requested (word documents/pdfs), of which can be sent via email or transferred to a usb, and I will provide a list of helpful resources or websites/video links to help with revision.
Finally, I upload my resources online so that the student has easy access to the resources used in the lesson, e.g. PowerPoints, handouts, worksheets, videos, etc… as well as additional learning aids.
