Personal Description:

Hi! My name is Aisling and I am a mathematics and chemistry teacher. I completed the five-year Mathematics & Science Education programme in UCD (MSc Mathematics & Science Education, First Class Honours; BSc Chemistry, Mathematics, and Education, First Class Honours). Teaching and providing guidance in the subjects of maths and chemistry have always been a passion of mine, which is why it is my chosen career path. I am a hard-worker and have thrived well in academics, achieving top of my year as well as being the 2017 Westmeath Naughton Scholar based on my Leaving Certificate results. I love working with young people and have plenty of experience doing so. I worked in a girls' sleepaway summer camp in West Virginia in the summer of 2019 as a Performing Arts Counsellor, teaching dance. I am organised and adaptable. I want students to feel more comfortable with these subjects and my interpersonal skills allow me to see what individual students will find motivating. I am friendly and personable. I understand how stressful the Junior and Leaving Certificate can be for students and I genuinely care about students and their attitudes towards maths and chemistry.

Tutoring Experience:

I am currently a full-time maths teacher, teaching 1st-6th Year maths (Junior Cycle OL and HL, Leaving Certificate OL and HL). I have taught maths, science and chemistry across all year groups throughout my teacher education. I have given grinds in maths and chemistry for the past three years via Zoom. I find that online grinds are just as effective and useful as in-person grinds and save time on travelling for both parties.

Approach to Grinds:

My grinds are very much course-focused, with the exam as the main focus as that is the main worry for students. I am flexible in that I can work with a student in an area they find difficult for many sessions or I can offer guidance as they practice the content alongside their classwork. I see the value in homework, and giving problems to practice between sessions would allow me to monitor and assess their progress and motivation. As a teacher-in-training, I understand that different students find different methods motivating, such as problem- solving approach and teaching through questioning, or by heavy prompts and use of analogies. My grinds are tailored to the individual students' needs and the teaching method which they engage with the most.
