Personal Description:

I am an American living now in Co Donegal near the border with Cos Derry and Tyrone. I retired from full-time teaching in London in July 2017. Currently I pursue independent research in Roman history and remain as active as possible teaching the Classics through tutorials.
I am married and have two adult daughters, a Labrador and a cat.

Tutoring Experience:

20 years Head of Classics at Queens Gate School, teaching Years 7 through 13. Taught Classics to over 20 successful Oxbridge candidates from a small cadre of classicists.
Previously tutored privately in London for 5 years in numerous subjects, especially History, Ancient History and Classics.
Taught in private school and at university level in the US for ten years prior to coming to the UK in 1993.

Approach to Grinds:

While I am keenly interested in the subjects I teach, my focus as a teacher and tutor has always been on the individual/s with whom I am working. I begin from the student's needs and help her or him to advance at a pace and in a manner that is challenging but not daunting. I expect my students to engage with me and the subjects we are studying in an open and honest manner, and I have always found that students respond best when the highest standards are expected of them.

From Rafia (3/5): (GCSE History) Terry is obviously a highly competent tutor - however I don't feel it was the right fit for my son.
Very pleasant to deal with, so absolutely no issues there.

From Colleen (5/5): (A-Level Greek (Ancient)) Terry was a superb tutor for my son. He developed his range and depth of understanding of Greek texts and, most importantly, helped build his confidence. Terry is erudite while also being highly approachable and responsive. He has an excellent understanding of the A-level syllabus as well as Oxbridge entrance exams and processes. He is very flexible and supportive and my son hugely enjoyed the tutorials and learned a great deal.
