Personal Description:

Hi! My name is Lorna and I'm currently studying Veterinary Medicine in UCD.

I graduated from UCC in 2019 with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science, specialising in plant and cell biology, with a strong focus on genetics and biotechnology, and my degree also contained a large amount of ecological studies, giving me a great basis to tutor the very wide-ranging biology Leaving Certificate curriculum.
Currently studying Veterinary Medicine, I have built further on my knowledge of cells, metabolism, and body systems. I also studied Biology and Chemistry (both HL) for my Leaving Certificate so I have always had a love of Science. I don't currently offer Chemistry grinds but have a strong background in this also.

I really enjoy learning (so much so that I committed to an extra 4 years in college after my BSc!) and sharing what I have learned so far.
I know how stressful exam can be, particularly the Leaving Cert, so I aim to minimise your stress for at least one subject!

Tutoring Experience:

- I have previously taught Leaving Certifica**Contact Detail Removed**vel biology grinds.
- I worked as a Laboratory Demonstrator in UCC School of BEES, teaching university students undergradua**Contact Detail Removed**vel biology and laboratory skills.
- My current college program is heavily focused on peer-led learning and teaching for theoretical and practical material, we frequently present information to our classmates, have group study and practice clinical skills together.

Approach to Grinds:

All grind sessions will be online via Google Meet, Zoom, or whatever preferred platform. I can share my screen to show notes, and I can also allow the student to add notes on the screen for interactive portions of the session. I will email the student any notes that I make for our topic, they can print these at home if they wish.

To begin with, I meet with the student and run through the list of topics covered in their exam (Higher and/or Ordinary Level), and mark off what they struggle with, what they enjoy, what they want to prioritise, etc. We will also discuss how they learn best - visual, audio, question-based, essay-based, etc. and create a plan for our sessions. We can also discuss what sort of grades they hope to obtain and create a plan to achieve this.

Before each meeting, we will decide together which topic they want to work on next, I will prepare notes to share and ask the student to have glanced through the chapter and prepare some questions on what they're struggling with most.
During the session, we will do some short questions relevant to the stage we are at in the material, and once we have finished a topic I will work through a full exam question with the student.
Session structure is not rigid and will be adjusted to suit what the student wants.

I feel that students (myself included) do best when engaged and interested in the material, so I aim to keep sessions interesting with lots of applied examples.
Maximum session time is usually 60 minutes, unless the student needs a longer session coming up to exams etc.
For Junior Certificate Science, I aim to keep sessions closer to 40 minutes, to avoid overwhelming the student. This can also be discussed depending on each student's needs.
