Personal Description:
I am originally from South-West Ireland, and I am a final year student and the University of Edinburgh, where I study Cognitive Science. Cognitive science aims to explain how the mind works using philosophy, psychology, and linguistics. I love all of those study areas, but I have a special interest in philosophy, and I am writing my dissertation in how values affect scientific research. Last year I did a year abroad in Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin, where I studied mostly philosophy (and a little bit of German!) In school I loved English, religion, and science, but I got the best results in French. At the end of secondary school I won the award for excellence in French, and my Leaving Certificate results were in the top five in my year. I am a very sociable person, I love to meet new people, and am glad to be of any help to anyone who wants to learn something new!
Tutoring Experience:
I have taught Irish grinds at both primary school level, and leaving certifica**Contact Detail Removed**vel. I have informal experience in teaching science, english, philosophy to my peers. I enjoy lesson planning, and always receive excellent feedback on my presentations. Since I have been at university I have had less time to teach others (as I have been trying to fill my own head with information!), but now I have some more spare time, it is something I am excited to pursue again.
Approach to Grinds:
My approach to giving grinds is very structured. Initial sessions will focus on areas of difficulty for the student. Following this, I will work on making the key concepts clear, and make careful note of which areas need more attention. We will then focus on exactly what is expected by the examiner, and the marking scheme. The grinds will be highly collaborative with the student, and I will provide exercises to be done in the student's own time. I will also focus on exam technique, and help the students to approach exams in a calm and rational way, so as to maximise good results.
