Information About Sam
This is how 2 referees rated Sam:
Since completing my undergrad (an HBSc at UofT in Cognitive and Computer Science), I have pursued independent research in Machine Learning and Evolutionary Computation. My work has been presented at EXAG'19 (an AIIDE workshop), where I showcased a Reinforcement Learning environment for open-source Sim City 1, in which agents learn to build cities in real-time by optimizing for metrics such as population, traffic, and crime. I am currently collaborating with other academics to further this research.
I have 5 years of tutoring experience, including University Math (e.g… CSC165 and MAT223 at UofT) and High School Math and Languages. I have taught in both French and English. I have led several workshops in improvisation and team-building, and collaborate frequently, and in diverse environments, as an actor, musician, and sound designer.
I am open to the needs of the individual student. I am passionate about proof and theory, and will always try to work from first principles, rather than proceeding by rote (I'm always keen to demystify a formula provided without context). I enjoy explaining things visually, using sketches and diagrams, and animating in real time the intuitive thought processes that motivate key pieces of theory, going beyond the static page and showing how mathematical concepts can in fact tell compelling stories when related through time.
