Personal Description:

My name is Penelope, I am 23 years old, born and raised in Toronto. I am passionate about science specifically biology but more importantly, I am passionate about teaching. I completed my undergraduate degree at UofT and I am currently in my first year of teacher's college at UofT. I am a very outgoing, fun person who loves to spend time with friends and family.

Tutoring Experience:

During my undergrad degree, I tutored students in both high school and elementary school. I also worked as a teaching assistant for a grade 10 general science class for two years, prior to starting college.

Tutoring Approach:

What makes me a great tutor-mentor, is not only my passion for the profession but the ability to adapt my teaching technique to an array of learning styles. During my years of experience, when I had the pleasure of working individually with struggling students, I learned that patience and positive feedback are key. Each student is unique and is dealing with their own issues. When I was attempting to teach them the course material I found that the best way to do so was to move slowly, keep the workload consistent and to keep encouraging the student, providing them hope, and practical solutions to keep them motivated.

Being an educator isn’t just about being able to relay facts to your students, it also requires complex, dynamic and multifaceted expertise to prepare students with a variety of skills they will need to become successful in their life path. My goal for my students would be to prepare them scholastically but to also teach them valuable coping and resiliency skills, life skills that in combination would make them well-rounded members of society. Each student is different, and it is that difference which teachers must recognize, and celebrate and support.
