This is how 2 referees rated Olivia:
I have a Bachelor's degree in Comprehensive Music from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, that I received in 2018. I have a Diploma of Biblical Studies from Bethany College in Saskatchewan, that I received in 2013. My music degree included countless live performances as both an ensemble and solo performer and pushed my creative limits as a soloist and as a learner. My diploma included theatre experience of two major play productions, one with the leading role in The Hiding Place. Performing is in my blood, as well as the study of past performing as some of my favourite classes in university were studying Shakespeare's plays.
I have a passion for learning and would love to be able to share that passion and to inspire others to become lifelong learners.
I have been playing my cello for over 20 years. I wished to pursue my love of music further and received my Bachelor of Music degree in 2018. In addition to private training, I have 9 years of large ensemble experience and 3 years of chamber ensemble experience. My other instruments are piano and voice. I am trained to a Royal Conservatory of Music Grade 7 level for piano, and for voice I have sung in three different choirs ranging in size and covering various styles and complexities of choral music from classical to jazz to contemporary.
In reference to the academic side of music, I am trained in classical music theory as well as the Schenkerian music theory method. I am also knowledgeable of the history of Western classical music ranging from the 900s to present day.
I have over a year and a half of private music lesson teaching experience, and would love the opportunity to further share my knowledge and passion of music.
My time at university also included various English courses. I have a deep love of Shakespeare's works in particular, though I also richly enjoy the study of literature in general. I have written many academic, analytical, and research papers, as well as personal and creative works . I have experience with the creative writing process including both poetry and prose.
I have 9 months cumulative experience of tutoring English Arts with Elementary and High School ages.
In terms of teaching music, I try to have a very comprehensive approach to the instrument. This includes technique development, musicality and expression, ear training, theory when applicable, and where the piece/instrument fits into the history of Western music. I give each student practice plans to allow the time in between sessions to be as productive as possible and to promote progress for the student. I make notes on what was covered in the session for the student to take home and refer back to.
For my approach to English tuition, it is to tackle the most pressing aspect of their English needs. This can range from help with writing a paper, including sentence structure and spelling, as well as working to understand a piece of literature and being able to speak or write about it. Depending on age and need, I include times of reading aloud during the session to help with confidence and understanding.
