Personal Description:

I am a native English speaker with a Master of Arts in English Literature and Creative Writing, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Literature, as well as a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology and Biology. Through my graduate work, I have developed a superior command of the English language, and I welcome the opportunity to apply my skills and experience as a tutor and editor. My science background, which included courses in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, and immunology, gives me a depth of knowledge that helps me to attain excellent results editing work in a wide range of fields.

Tutoring Experience:

Besides solidifying my editing and writing skills through my academic career, I worked as a teaching assistant and editor in various capacities while at Concordia University. I was a teaching assistant for two years, working with both large classes as well as mentoring one-on-one. I assisted with various courses focused on British literature, facilitating discussion, marking and editing papers, holding thesis workshops, and preparing weekly tutorials on lecture materials. For the Engineering department, I assisted with their Technical Communications course, preparing lesson plans, and marking and editing assignments, reports, and oral presentations to gauge student progress. The marking I did was very detailed and thorough, focusing on grammar, content, and line editing.

I have four years of experience editing and teaching outside of academia. Recently, I have been an ESL Skype Tutor for SAGE Academy in Korea, marked English college exams for the government of Quebec, and have been working as a freelance editor in Montreal. As a tutor, I discussed English literature readings with my students, marking their workbook assignments, and giving detailed lessons on sentence construction, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. As a freelance editor and tutor for students at McGill University, I edit theses, essays, and articles for publication, doing comprehensive edits that include reading for content and mechanics (developmental and substantive editing, as well as line editing), as well as tutoring for courses and exams.

Previously, while living in St. John’s, Newfoundland, I worked as an ESL teacher and was the editor of a literary journal, both of which made me realize that on top of writing, editing and teaching were also passions of mine. My ESL position was with the Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, where I taught basic and intermediate writing and conversation classes, working with mature refugee and immigrant students on their reading comprehension, writing, and oral communication skills. For the literary journal, Paragon VI from Paragon Press, affiliated with Memorial University, my work included developing the year’s journal as a whole, including reading, selecting, proofreading, and copy editing submissions. During my tenure at Concordia, I continued in this field as an editor for the Concordia Write Nights chapbook.

Tutoring Approach:

I am organized and detail-oriented, and through my education and employment as a teacher and editor, I have gained superior communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. I am an excellent and reliable editor and tutor and work well under pressure and with tight deadlines. I am comfortable with editing projects outside of my area of education, which I believe is instrumental in working as a tutor and editor. My goal is to be encouraging to students, and to help them set goals for themselves. I think it is important to assess students to see where they need the most help, come up with a plan to work on problem areas, and to break projects down into discrete and manageable tasks.
