Tutoring Experience:

I started in the educational field more than twenty years ago when I worked at Sylvan Learning Centre, delivering their reading and writing programs. From there, I launched my own personal tutoring service, focusing on the elementary grades. I covered everything from full-on remedial reading programs, high school essays to junior high school math. I homeschooled both of my kids and still assist my teenage son with his online programs. I shifted into the school environment, becoming an educational aide first at a private Christian school for three years before becoming a substitute EA at the public schools where I've helped out in all elementary grades. I specialize in working with special needs kids and with those just in need of a little hands-up. I can happily handle math to the end of grade 9, and all levels of reading and writing, including high school Social Studies and English. As a published author, I can also provide writing lessons as enrichment, for those who love to geek out with stories.

Tutoring Approach:

I treat each session like a workout. I start with a couple of warm-up exercises of previously learned concepts, move into the core lessons which form the bulk of our time together and then end with a 'cool-down' period where the day's concepts are reviewed orally or we pull out a favored activity. Encouragement, use of manipulatives and multiple, varied activities keep the sessions humming along.
