Map Location

Personal Description:

I have recently returned to the Nanaimo area (Gabriola Island) area after thirty years’ teaching in Thailand with a variety of NGOs and community based organisations, first with Cambodian, Lao and Vietnamese refugees prior to their resettlement or repatriation and since 1998 with refugees and displaced youth from Burma.

Tutoring Experience:

As coordinator of a college preparatory program, I assisted 135 youth from Burma attain their GED (General Education Development) certificates as required for university entrance applications. Though I am approaching retirement age, working with enthusiastic and motivated young adults has maintained what I hope is a youthful optimism in the transformative nature of education.
During the last ten years I have taught youth from Burma with little or no access to formal education. Our school produced social justice advocates, health workers, teachers, community mobilisers and students prepared for university education.

While much of my time has been spent in curriculum development and administrative duties, my true passion is teaching, whether it be literacy, university preparation, pre-intermediate conversation classes, analysis of media trends in developing democracies or training teachers. I am accustomed to working in resource challenged environments and I am adept at developing suitably pitched, stimulating participatory lessons, particularly for mixed ability level groupings.

Tutoring Approach:

My students would tell you that studying with me put them at ease in the classroom through a combination of good fun, hard work, and respect for diversity of life experience in different cultures. I have a reputation of being a "slow" teacher in that I aim for my students to have a thorough understanding of material rather than racing to complete a lesson or textbook.
