I am an Ontario and British Columbia Certified teacher specializing in teaching secondary math and physics (certification available on the public registry with full detail). I obtained both of my Bachelor of Science (physics) and Master of Teaching degrees from the University of Toronto. I currently teach Pre-Calculus 11, Pre-Calculus 12 and Calculus 12 at an independent school in Vancouver.
Prior to the last year of my undergraduate studies, I never planned on going into teaching, but then realized that I excel at explaining problems to people and reading their reactions while doing it.
I am perfectly bilingual in English and Mandarin. I do offer Chinese language lessons to all levels and ages, including adults. Please note that it's a language that takes serious dedication to master, but I guarantee the students’ impeccable pronunciations and strong cultural understandings with my lessons.
I taught at some of the most prestigious independent schools in Canada (University of Toronto Schools, Appleby College), as well as schools dedicated for students struggling with every academic and life problems imaginable at the public board. I found one theme that occurs to students at literally all levels: unnecessary stress about mathematics. As a teacher, I do my best to remedy those stress by providing clear and specific expectations and eliminating the unpredictables as much as possible without having to lower the standards in any way. I find my students react very well to this strategy and generally put in much more effort when presented with the bite-sized tasks and clear instructions.
I already have multiple students that referred to me as the best math teacher they ever had in my short career. Each student’s preferences and learning habit may vary, but I take personal pride in shaping the best math and physics students I could.
I will not be your children’s everyday teacher given my full-time teaching position. Simply put, I aim to equip them with the excellent learning habit that will benefit them in the long run in my sessions.
I do not charge for the first meeting with the student and the parents (15-30 minutes, this is a must for me to understand the current state of the student). I do, however, request cash or e-transfer payment before each session to avoid any awkward situations.
Time spent before and after each session for check-ups and some extra mentoring does not count towards instruction time. Reasonable traveling costs are extra for locations outside Vancouver or Richmond.
