Information About Joey

Halifax tutor

Personal Description:

I am a recent science graduate who loves teaching and helping others. I have a keen interest in the physical sciences, and I am hoping to pursue a master's and professional degree in the future. In the meantime, I am dedicating my time to helping students succeed. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer in my community- donating medical supplies to underserved regions, fundraising with women's shelters and first nations charities, and volunteering at the hospital. Outside of these extracurriculars, a few of my interests are technology, environmentalism, infrastructure and healthcare!

Tutoring Experience:

Although I am new to tutoring, helping others learn material is nothing new to me. Having gone through years of university, I oftentimes tutored classmates in study groups. Additionally, as student council president, I was in charge of funding our peer tutoring services for science students and understand the needs that students require to flourish in a good learning environment. Throughout that time, I had the opportunity to mentor countless incoming first-year students.

Tutoring Approach:

Some students may need more help in a certain topic, and that is okay, because not everyone learns the same way, we all have our own perspectives. The first key to reaching students is learning what works best for them to learn a topic, and that must be holistically appraised for each new topic. Additionally, to best learn and remember a topic, it is essential that the student is enthused about the subject matter. My second key is to make the topic relatable, any topic can be interesting when it can directly be applied to the student's world-experience. My third key is patience and compassion, to keep trying different methods until the student is confident in the subject at hand beyond a reason of a doubt, and encourage them to persevere.
