Hi there! I am a researcher and 4th-year student at Quest University Canada, a private non-profit university which focusses solely on excellence in undergraduate education right here in Squamish BC! My research project pertains to ethics and education and centers around the question: how do we make good people? Although I have received excellent interdisciplinary training in both the liberal arts and sciences, I have chosen philosophy and education as my concentration fields. I am among the top 10% of students at the university in academic performance and have contributed significantly to the extracurricular life of my community. I have been working as the student representative on the university's learning outcomes renewal committee to refresh the university core outcomes based on community input and best practices research. In addition, I have served School District 48 sea to sky as a research support specialist to assist in the writing of their education plan documents. This is all to say that I care deeply about the educational experience of all students in the sea to sky corridor. I love to nerd out about anatomy, plants and animals, and am passionate about rigorous thinking and argumentation. The latter makes me a strong and enthusiastic tutor in biology and fields which require essay writing such as the social sciences and humanities. I am positioned well as a tutor for senior year students, having been through the BC public school system in this district (howe sound secondary grad). I am open to working with students from earlier grades and from all walks of life, and attempt to provide a diversity of perspectives in my tutoring to enlighten those who have been steeped too long in Western ways of understanding the world which may not recognize contemporary identities/sexualities/genders/cultures.
I am a peer tutor at Quest University, which involves providing academic support for my fellow undergraduate students. I read essays and assist in structuring arguments and evidence and provide assistance in quantitative reasoning. I served as an intern for a year at the Vancouver Institute for Philosophy for Children, during which time I helped develop a curriculum for an innovative summer camp aimed to enculture critical and ethical thinking skills. As a Quest student, it is a daily practice to assist my peers in group coursework and contribute to a supportive learning environment in an intimate classroom setting. I served as a peer tutor throughout my high school years, including work as a support aide for an individual with special needs (Autism spectrum).

My approach to tutoring involves engaging the student to develop existing areas of interest within a field of inquiry. This means "meeting them where they are at" and working from existing strengths and abilities. Often students are not aware of what they are capable of and developing a growth mindset concerning performance is a priority of mine. As a working researcher, I am committed to best practices in pedagogy and instruction, and it is the highest priority of mine to make sure that the learner feels respected and addressed. These more fundamental aspects of one's teacher/learner relationship are significant predictors of performance. That is to say, a student's perception of the teacher/tutor's level of engagement and involvement contributes significantly to the student's degree of self-efficacy and successful delivery of excellent work. I am happy to work through specific assignments or test prep (especially biology for the latter) as well as more long term personal tutoring to develop more fundamental study habits and higher order thinking skills. If it is so desired, I am also happy to engage with learners in ethical inquiry to establish a good understanding of ethical behaviour and principles to help learners identify their beliefs and evaluate claims from a variety of sources.
