Information About Hayley

Is your high schooler not reaching their full potential? I can help! I specialize in tutoring Mathematics and Computer Science to students who are struggling with perfectionism, anxiety, and stress. While I work with students of any gender, I've especially focused on lowering barriers for girls interested in STEM careers. I'm a Software Developer and I would like to be part of helping young women explore STEM subjects and create a lifelong passion for problem solving.
A bit about me: I was born and raised in Winnipeg, and experienced great success at school and at university due to amazing and unforgettable teachers. Not only did I experience great teachers in the classroom, but both my parents are teachers. I recently completed a masters degree specializing in Human Computer Interaction, studying how we can design software to increase learnability. Effective communication is important to me, especially after working in Japan for one year and learning the importance of clarity when there is a language barrier.
I am familiar with the BC math curriculums from from grade 8 to grade 12, including Calculus. I am currently privately tutoring the entire grade 11 and grade 12 online pre-calculus courses to students.
While at UBC, I was a teaching assistant for 2 years. I lectured to classes with 20-40 undergraduate or masters-level students and gave one-on-one and group feedback on projects and writing. I also was a private tutor for 4 years throughout my undergraduate degree, mostly tutoring high school and first year university students in math.
My goal for my students is to create understanding and confidence in being able to tackle new and unfamiliar problems. For many of my students, this involves learning how to understand what a difficult question is asking, how to handle uncertain situations, and how to thrive in stressful exam situations. I believe it's important to not only understand the course material, but also how to apply it successfully.
Learning takes place in an environment of mutual respect in which the student is encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves. I adjust my approach depending on the student’s needs and learning style. We work together to create reasonable goals and timelines.
