Personal Description:

Salve! I'm Erika, a first year PhD student in classics at the University of Toronto. My research is on Greek literature and I absolutely love the study of ancient languages and cultures! Although I was born just outside of Toronto, and call Toronto my home, travelling is one of my passions, and I have lived and visited many exciting locales across three continents, including Rome, Pompeii, and London. I have been studying the Latin language for six years, and Greek for three, learning from a variety of textbooks; I am very familiar with the Cambridge Latin Course, Wheelock's Latin, and Shelmerdine's Introduction to Latin, for Latin, and Wheelock's Greek for Ancient and Koine Greek. I am happy to accommodate for any preferred materials. I am also able to aid in preparation for the National Latin Exam. I am a dedicated scholar, and have won over a dozen scholarships from my university during my undergraduate degree. I firmly believe that the study of ancient languages is an exciting, fascinating, and illuminating experience, and I hope to pass on my love and enthusiasm for the languages and cultures of the Romans and Greeks!

Tutoring Experience:

I have a year's experience as a teacher's assistant at the university level, and two years' experience teaching Latin as a teacher's assistant in high schools. I have been privately tutoring in Latin and Greek for three years.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should be enjoyable and accessible. I will adjust my approach to tutoring based on the needs and strengths of the student, as all people learn differently. However, my methods involve bringing in various sources, such as related cultural materials, including works in translation, and photographs of relevant art pieces, in order to create necessary cultural contextual connections. I believe that Latin and Greek should always be studied in context, and viewed through a variety of methods, in order to more fully appreciate the value of the language.
