NOTICE ** At this time I am only accepting online students. Most subjects can be easily tutored online so please don't hesitate to ask about how we can make that work for you **
Hello! My name is Cierrah and I am currently an undergraduate student in Victoria, British Columbia, in my sophomore year of a B.A (Honours): English concentration.
I have years of experience in tutoring students from ages 4 to 60 on a casual and professional basis, and I love it!
I am passionate about English, Writing, Music, Theatre, and Teaching in general - so I always bring my passion into my lessons.
I live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. My hobbies include writing, rock-climbing, playing music, horseback riding, surfing, and anything else in the great outdoors!
On top of being a tutor, I also worked for the Greater Victoria Shakespeare festival and teach Improvisational Theater Workshops part-time. I have even toured Canada teaching Improv!
My previous students have called me: "patient", "hilarious", "relate-able", and "a good explainer."
When I was in high school, my family moved away from Vancouver Island to live in a very rural area of Alberta. Not wanting to leave my school in BC, I decided to stay behind, on my own, until graduation. Meanwhile, my siblings started homeschooling. Soon, I began to tutor my siblings in all of their courses (grades 9-12) online, while I was finishing school myself. Additionally, to make some extra money, I began to pick up jobs tutoring my peers. From this, a passion for teaching was born!
After getting my High school diploma, and graduating with a perfect GPA, I started an Improv troupe and toured Canada teaching Improv. I was even given the opportunity to teach Improv at the National Improv Festival in Ottawa in 2014.
At the same time, I continued to tutor students in academic subjects. Specializing in English, but also teaching Math, Physics, Music, History, Sociology, and beginner Spanish, I have experience teaching students from many different walks of life.
In my first year of college, I spent a semester tutoring a middle-aged woman, who was both blind and hard of hearing, in her college-level academics, particularly in first-year sociology. Now, I tend to specialize in home schooled student curriculum, which I enjoy because of the flexibility of how we can cover the material. That being said, I also have tons of experience sticking to the classic curriculum, when required.
While I love education and have been blessed to have gone through the classical system with very little trouble, I believe the biggest flaw in our education system today is in its tendency to generalize the way subjects are taught, with very little room for the specific and unique ways in which different students learn.
My mission is to be adaptable and to give students a partial say in their own education: I will do this by allowing my tutoring style to be influenced by each individual student's style of learning.
However, I also understand that the education system is slow in changing, and students must be able to adapt somewhat to practised teaching styles. My hope is to also leave each student with the tools to take their education and studying into their own hands so that they may learn by both the widely accepted methods, as well as by their own personal strengths.
This is why I will offer my first session with each student free of charge! In the first session, we can get to know each other a bit, discuss learning styles and expected outcomes, and decide whether or not I will be a good fit for you.
It is also very important to me that my students feel that they are being heard and are comfortable talking to me about any learning difficulties they might have. Because of this, I welcome any constructive criticism on my teaching, and will always do my best to adapt my methods in order to better help my students learn!
