Personal Description:

I am a recent MPhil graduate with a passion for teaching in cross-cultural and multilingual settings. I do not shy away from a challenge. Having lived and worked in over five continents throughout my life, I have developed key skills in adaptability and openness to new experiences. I am an empathetic and sensitive youth worker, and I place great importance on being approachable and relatable. My goal in every tutoring and mentorship situation is to find the best way to pass on my enthusiasm for learning and love of language, reading, and writing, as well as educational development more broadly.

Tutoring Experience:

As a mentor and tutor in a variety of informal education and school classroom settings, I have gained key skills in employing the creative arts to engage young people. From 2012-2013, I worked through the British Council as an English language assistant at a Spanish high school, having also gained my TEFL qualification in a renowned Barcelona language academy.
More locally, I volunteered as a Story Planet workshop volunteer in TDSB schools, receiving training in anti-oppressive frameworks and utilising the growth learning mindset as a way to combat self-doubt and encourage creativity amongst young people aged 7-12. Similarly, having worked as a volunteer with a local refugee family shelter's literacy programme for children aged 6-12 for over four years, I have developed expertise in responding to individual needs and learning styles with professionalism and great attention to detail, not to mention a tireless sense of fun.
As Programs Officer with the Latin American Foundation for the Future, I assisted in program delivery for at-risk and Indigenous youth in the Cusco region of Peru. The charity runs multiple educational programs focused on personal development and vocational skills, including for adolescent mothers who are survivors of abuse. Delivering programs in this context was certainly challenging, but allowed me to learn from young people’s resilience and dedication to overcoming personal trauma. I am also certified in safeTALK suicide alertness training, evidence of my commitment to facilitating safe and positive spaces for at-risk young people.

Tutoring Approach:

Without a doubt, employing an empathetic approach with young learners is key to successful and meaningful tutoring and mentorship. For me, empathy means active listening and thoughtful responding, both in everyday conversations and in educational engagement. Having developed lesson plans and programme activities for youth in different informal and classroom-based contexts, I know that education can sometimes seem alienating and intimidating for students. I strongly believe that education can – and should – be inclusive, enjoyable, and ultimately life-changing. Students therefore need mentors who understand and respect them, and who provide welcoming and encouraging spaces for them to share their thoughts and ideas.
