Personal Description:

I am a friendly, patient person. I am very interested in teaching students the skills and knowledge necessary to become a better learner and to achieve the goals and dreams that they have set out for themselves. I currently am a research assistant at London Health Sciences Centre and am looking to improve my teaching skills as I am considering going back to school to be a teacher. I am happy to meet new people and learn as much from them as they from me. I enjoy reading, watching and playing sports, and creative writing and collaboration.

Tutoring Experience:

I have volunteered in several different classrooms as an undergraduate. I taught conflict management once a week to a grade 6 classroom in 2013. Every Monday we would go to their classroom and spend the morning going through the curriculum, interacting, and learning with them. I worked with a group of other students, which was wonderful for my first teaching experience. I bonded with my students - especially those who had an interest in reading. In 2014 and 2015 I was a part of Brain Day which endeavoured to teach children about brain injuries and the importance of wearing a helmet. I was in several different classrooms for half a day where we taught them about the brain and how it works. Since then I have not worked with children to teach, but helped them have fun as a supervisor at an amusement park. I taught them about the ponies there and why it was important to be calm and happy around them.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in the old addage of 'give a person a fish, feed them for a day; teach a person to fish, they will be fed for a lifetime.' When I work with a child I want to show them how I solve a problem or how to study and learn the information. I will work hard to show them different ways of thinking if my personal problem solving strategy does not work. I also want to connect with them through their hobbies and things that interest them and bring them into their schoolwork. Viewing problems through a different lens can help give a foundation to students on how to think through problems and studying.
