Personal Description:

I’m a small-town girl with big dreams! Born and raised in the suburbs of Toronto, I discovered my love for languages early and relocated to the only bilingual university in Canada to pursue my passion for French.

Despite being limited to a standard, public school system Core French class (rather than pursuing French immersion), I superseded all expectations of the average learner in my environment.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been studying the French language for over 13 years. I am in my third year at the University of Ottawa for a B.A. in French as a Second Language and English. I worked for the Durham District Public School Board as an Educational Assistant for over a year and as a Tutor at the Strathcona Homework Help Club for ages 6 - 14. In addition, I have extensive experience working with special needs individuals.

Tutoring Approach:

Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have dedicated my time to providing valuable, engaging, and interactive online services. I am comfortable working with pre-existing material to help advance you in current studies, in addition to creating customized learning material for you.

I am a firm believer that no two people alike, therefore their educational experiences should not be either. My goal is to strive towards achieving your goals in an engaging and interactive environment. I develop strategies with you that accounts for your strongest form of multiple intelligence (MI) and incorporate your preferred learning style.

The key takeaway here is that this is about you.

So… Why Me?
Despite achieving a high degree of mastery in the French language, much like yourself, the most important thing is that I am a second language learner too. Because I am not a native French speaker, nor was I immersed in the language until in my later years.

I challenged myself and my capabilities by applying for a full French immersion program at the University of Ottawa. I ignored the recommendation not to enroll in this program without being previously immersed in French. Lo and behold, my evaluation score resulted in a placement in two second-year courses, but in my first year.

I pride myself on drawing unique strengths to amplify the learning experience from things that others consider disadvantageous.

My family is not French, nor was I immersed into the language until my later years. For that reason, I will be able to understand and relate too many of the challenges that you will face learning French in a limited, educational setting.

From a technical standpoint, I firmly believe that it is much more advantageous for beginners to learn a language from a French as a Second Language teacher. For individuals who exposed to a completely immersive environment from the beginning, there is a consistent lack of competency in basic elements and principles of the French language.

Don’t get me wrong! People who learned French through their families or in an immersion setting generally possess nearly flawless oral capabilities but struggle with oral components such as grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.

I believe the best method of introducing somebody to a language is by building a strong foundation of the basic principles. Then, you proceed to the second stage of language learning, which is the development of oral capabilities. Finally, you master your language-speaking abilities by fine-tuning your accent, increasing your exposure, and most importantly - blossoming your confidence!
