Personal Description:

Hi there! My name is Cait and I am a recent graduate (April 2021) from Simon Fraser University with a BA in Communication and a minor in English. I am passionate about teaching and love tutoring individuals from all age groups and backgrounds in English literature, and communication theories. I am also a freelance writer working in both technical writing and creative writing, so if it is writing help you need I would be more than happy to help! I am very personable and believe that comfort, confidence and open-communication is essential to building a strong learning environment.

Tutoring Experience:

I have around two years of experience teaching and tutoring in various capacities. I love making lessons interactive and engaging by adding creative elements. I understand that not everyone learns well in the same manner and always adapt my teaching according to what excites the student. Most of my experience is in working with children and young adults.

As a private tutor, I have taught mainly high-school aged youth in their English Literature classes, including studying for the APA English examination. Since 2017, I have also worked for several non-profit organizations teaching educational programming to children and youth. This programming was focused on reading, writing, history and geology.

Tutoring Approach:

At the initial tutoring session I like to spend a portion of the time going over what the student hopes to gain from my services. What are some concepts that have been hindering them in their studies? Where are some areas that they feel the most confident in?
From there, we will figure out a strategy to tackle these concepts that both parties are happy with. I love incorporating creative activities that help get the flow of ideas moving, and are enjoyable to do. However, if one likes a serious and more traditional method of learning that is okay as well. If there is a specific homework problem that one is struggling with I will provide tools to take on the challenge in a way that is fun instead of intimidating. I put an emphasis on open communication; there are never any wrong questions!
