Personal Description:
I am a UBC BSc Mathematics Graduate currently in the process of preparing for medical school applications to pursue a career in healthcare.
Tutoring Experience:
I have 4000+ hours of tutoring experience and have aided 50+ students in improving their skills and test scores. My students have mainly ranged from grade 10 to 2nd-year university students seeking assistance in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. I have also tutored younger students who sought to go beyond the BC curriculum or improve their skills and knowledge for math contests such as CNML, COMC, AMC, etc.
During my bachelors' studies, I also tutored students in a group setting in preparation for midterms and final exams for first-year calculus courses; explained concepts when required, answered student questions, and designed problems with accompanying solution bank for students to use as practice for their exams.
Tutoring Approach:
Unfortunately, most classes tend to introduce students to new material using an instructional format that does not encourage the development of problem-solving skills in students. Frequently, students are introduced to a new topic by being provided a description of new terminologies or ideas; followed by a number of sample questions and their associated solutions. After these are presented, the solution steps and the patterns are reinforced by merely having students apply the steps to many similar questions. This approach does not allow students to develop any problem-solving skills and does not aid them in gaining an understanding of the underlying concepts. Hence, I witness many students who struggle once the question is changed slightly, has slightly different parameters or is worded differently. Furthermore, I notice students who tend to forget these materials after half a semester as they had not used them for a while. In my approach, my focus is on helping students learn to problem-solve and to aid them to focus their attention on the concepts and the underlying reason behind the "steps" they were told to follow in class. I heavily discourage the use of calculators as I have found it to be one of the major contributors to lowering a students' creativity in mathematics.
For online sessions, I utilize an online virtual whiteboard where my students can see what I write and students can write as well to make the interaction more engaging. Having a device with touch capability will aid students in writing on the virtual whiteboard.
