Information About Andrew
This is how 2 referees rated Andrew:
I'm in my fourth year of study in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria. I moved here from the UK where I completed secondary education up to A-level, where I took courses in Math, Chemistry and Physics. I really enjoy the satisfaction of working through a difficult topic with somebody and seeing the answers just "click" for them. In my spare time I like to go rock climbing, play tennis, work on personal projects and cultivate house plants. I am a patient, well-tempered and well-rounded person.
I have recently discovered a passion for Oriental cultures and languages, right now I am teaching myself Japanese and hope to do a year long work term in Japan next year as part of my degree program.
I don't have any formal experience that relates directly to tutoring, however I frequently tutor my colleagues at the university in courses we share as well as helping them complete assignments. Since I am a high achieving student, I am often looked to for advice or support on these courses. I feel like this experience has well enabled me to apply myself in a more formal tutoring role, and I look forward to the opportunity to try.
My approach to tutoring consists mostly of minimal guidance towards the correct answer, I believe it is important to allow the student to come to the appropriate conclusions on their own. If they are unable to reach said conclusion then it is important to go as far back in the student's understanding as is necessary to address the lack of understanding. This is one of the most important things I have learned during my time at the University of Victoria: a strong foundation is absolutely necessary going forward in education.
