This is how 2 referees rated Andrea:
This past year I graduated from Western University with a Bachelor in Medical Sciences obtaining an Honors Specialization in
Medical Biophysics (Clinical Physics Concentration) and I am currently completing a Masters of Engineering in Medicine. I love teaching students and helping them achieve their academic goals.
For the past three years, I have been a math and physics tutor at a peer-run help centre at Western University, known as the Peer Assisted Learning Centre (PAL Centre). Students come in with general questions or subject-specific learning concerns and I help them develop learning strategies to achieve their academic goals, specifically with problem-solving courses. I always make sure that the PAL Centre is a positive and inclusive environment, since it may be intimidating for some students to ask for help: sometimes just by building a student’s confidence can lead to their success. It is very satisfying to help students overcome their academic
difficulties and to see the smile on their faces when a challenging concept finally “clicks”. I hope to provide the same experience to all the students I tutor.
I also have experience working for Prep 101. For the past two years, I taught physics for their MCAT prep course. I prepared and taught my own lectures while explaining tough concepts in a short period of time. This position taught me to be very organized and creative in the way I explain lecture material. I enjoyed mentoring my students and giving them strategies to succeed
on their MCAT in order to help them achieve their dreams of becoming doctors.
Through my volunteering experience at the PAL centre and teaching experience at Prep 101, I have developed strong communication skills; I am very clear and thorough in my explanation of concepts. I am also able to use a variety of methods/techniques to explain different types of course material with an emphasis on active learning techniques. I always work with a high level of commitment and enthusiasm no matter what I do.
