Personal Description:
Hi! I am Amy. If you are looking for someone with good & practical learning habits and experience in helping students succeed, you've found the right person!
I have over 5 years of tutoring experience in math, physics, and ESL. I find tutoring a rewarding experience and I always customize my lessons to fit the students' needs so that students can gain the most out of the session. My previous students describe me as a relaxed, motivative, and helpful person :)
As for my education, I graduated from high school with an average of 97, and I recently graduated from the Electrical Engineering program at the University of Waterloo with 4.0 GPA (96.8 average for both 3rd and 4th years).
I am never a smart person, but I am very detail-oriented and reflective. So I am confident that I can help you discover your most suitable learning strategies that will help you succeed in the long run. With my knowledge and expertise, you can also trust me on helping you prepare for your urgent upcoming exams or meeting your short term goals.
I currently live in Aurora and have engineering work during the day (9am - 5pm).
I am willing to travel to your house if the distance is short (either in Aurora or downtown Toronto), but you would gain more flexibility with me if you choose the online tutoring option.
Please reach out if you are interested, I am thrilled to meet you and participate in your development journey!
Tutoring Experience:
- With the use of concept summary, guided students through practice problems with problem-solving strategies for high school and first year university math and physics classes.
- Created lesson materials to improve memory and comprehension of English, Chinese, Math and Science including flashcards, practice quizzes and worksheets.
- Provided essay writing guidance with focus on structural improvements (thesis, evidence, and explanation).
- Collaborated with parents to identify any special needs of student.
- Although every person is different, but it is possible for you to experience great improvement if you trust me and put in the effort yourself. I have students who were failing math and ended up getting 90+ within 3 months of tutoring, I also have adult client with zero Chinese knowledge who is now able to hold simple daily Chinese conversations.
Tutoring Approach:
Targeted, efficient, encouraging.
- Targeted: I teach lessons that are truly tailor made to my student. The way I structure my questions are driven by the students' preferred communication and learning methods. Besides, exam rubrics will feature heavily. As a person who has scored high in numerous exams over the years, I know how the papers are marked and how best to structure answers so full marks can be gained. For adults, I focus on understanding their needs and goals, and design the plan with them such that they have more control and self-driven force in this development journey.
- Efficient: I like to set an agenda (either by myself or ask students to have their questions prepared before the meeting) to best utilize the time. All notes from me will be digitally shared with the students via Google drive so that you can access it any time without fear of losing it.
- Encouraging: I believe that confidence is crucial for learning. I like to encourage, not humiliate/belittle you. I will make sure that the topic is pitched perfectly so the students can make speedy progress. Do not underestimate the importance of pitching - some teachers I had make the fatal mistakes of thinking that math or new language is so easy that students get frustrated and unconfident when they can't figure things out.
