Personal Description:

Hello there! My name is Richard (Métis) and I am a published writer in central Alberta and University Instructor in English and Creative Writing, with a focus on books written by Indigenous authors, but interests in all genres of fiction, poetry and literature. I also have four years experience as an assistant editor at the literary magazine, Epoch. My experience is quite broad, with degrees, minors and multiple courses in History (African History, European History, Classics), Creative Writing, Indigenous Studies, and English Literature. I have a Masters degree in Creative Writing from Cornell University and three years of teaching experience there. I love helping writers of any genre and from any background, as I believe that writing is a powerful tool of expression and communication, both practical and artistic, and can not only help us achieve our goals, but help us to think critically and thoughtfully about the world we live in while providing a strong sense of accomplishment.

Tutoring Experience:

I taught college English and Creative Writing full time for three years at Cornell University in New York State. I have also tutored High School, Middle School, and elementary level Creative Writing and English as a volunteer in both one-on-one and group settings, plus experience with international newcomers in Edmonton and at the University of Alberta. Furthermore, with many close international friends and former house mates while attending college, I have years of informal experience helping both first language and second language English speakers with their writing, including essays, resumés, college applications, and much more. I have volunteer-taught Creative Writing to Indigenous High School students interested in Fiction and Poetry. Also, as a literary magazine assistant editor (Epoch Magazine) for four years, I have first hand experience and I know what teachers, college admissions officers, and publishers want to see when it comes to writing.

Tutoring Approach:

I ask students to bring some examples of their own writing, or questions and concerns, and to look at areas for improvement while engaging broader topics in writing along the way. In my view, seeing one's own writing improve right before one's eyes is an extremely rewarding and productive experience. I can help with any and all projects, including essays (high school, college, etc.), resumés, cover letters, college applications, websites, business promotion, poems, short stories, and novels, but also with general writing tips, techniques, or advice on the writing life and career options. Whether you have a child looking to improve their grades in a Language Arts class, or you have a statement of purpose to write for a college application, or you are an emerging writer looking to brush up on a story for publication, I can be your guide and tutor!
