Information About Adam

Waterloo tutor

Personal Description:

Hi! I'm a 4th year psychology undergraduate at Wilfred Laurier. I'm moving forward with a M.A in education soon, and am very passionate about teaching. I truly believe that being able to connect with one person individually is how you can connect with a classroom successfully. I plan on helping your child or adolescent to the best of my ability, ensuring that whatever roadblocks are in the way of his/her academic development are thoroughly addressed.

Tutoring Experience:

I have 2 years of tutoring experience part-time, as well as 2 months of teaching full-time. During my tutoring experience, I was primarily a math tutor for grade 9's and 10's, conducting about 1-2 sessions a week for about 3-4 students at a time. I learned a great deal about how different individuals learn in different ways, and how my tutoring had to be modified to accommodate the often stark contrast in how people learn. During my teaching experience, I was a full-time English teacher abroad in Jakarta, Indonesia. This was a terrific experience that most importantly taught me about the classroom dynamic, how some students end up running the show, and how to engage with those who aren't readily volunteering to participate.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to make the student self-sufficient, and quickly discover what makes them tick, so that I can change the way they look at studying and actually want to proactively study! I believe this can be done through exposing the student to certain frameworks, showing them different ways of thinking, showing them they're actually much smarter then they were lead to believe, etc. My secondary approach is to understand how the student learns, and relate to the material accordingly. Understanding this will accelerate the student's self-sufficient learning as well.
