Personal Description:

After School I joined the Navy as an Officer an obtained a science degree and a qualification to control a guided missile destroyer. I then specialised in surveying using depth sounders, radio systems and lasers to measure the oceans. These all used the principles of Physics in the real world. I left the RAN after 10 years service and returned to my old boarding school as the Physics Master. With lots of practical experience using the of Physics I could readily explain the concepts in the classroom and excite the students. A funny thing happened. The subject became very popular and the student grades were outstanding. Three students were ranked in the top ten students in NSW in that first year and half the class were in the top 10% in the state. It was a non selective regional school and these results were unparallelled in the region. I put this down to having a "training" rather than "teaching" approach, spiced with a good blend of relevant salty yarns. I found my vocation and loved teaching. (Note: The Training approach puts the responsibility on the Instructor to train so that every student can get 100% accuracy and the ship does not sink! It is a different mindset and can be very helpful for many students.)

Tuition Experience:

The Scots School Bathurst - 15 years

Tutoring Approach:

A) I am very happy to use technology such as skype and to tutor small groups* in any location. I also have plenty of resources and helpful notes and exercises which I have produced to help students.
B) Making it fun and interesting with lots of encouragement.
C) Using a first principle approach. This means making sure students grasp the symbols, the language, concepts, formulas and the units involved in each topic. Then we can dissect problems, rearrange formulae and conquer the problem as required rather than have problems defeat us. Problem solving actually becomes fun when the mystery is removed and the students understand the basics. The good news is that you can get full marks. Practice and knowing what you are doing see to this.
* Additional students group sessions are encouraged. They may involve a slightly higher hourly rate.
