I have been teaching Mathematics for over 13 years in UK Comprehensive High Schools, but recently moved to Sydney to live with my fiancé and set up family life here in Australia. I take pride in being able to quickly cultivate excellent relationships with students by giving engaging and exciting lessons they enjoy. This has been reflected by routinely receiving outstanding lesson observations. I live an active lifestyle and believe teachers must be inspirational and motivational. I am a very positive individual and always look to challenge myself in all areas of my life.
I have taught maths in two comprehensive school to a vast number of students ranging in ability from special needs up to the most gifted and talented students. I have developed a rich array of teaching styles to cater for varied students' needs. I have worked as Head of Year for the past 3 years so have had unique insights into challenging students and pride myself on being able to motivate even the most disengaged students. I have a proven record of working with both lower ability disadvantaged students right through to the most able Gifted and Talented individuals. I consistently gain Outstanding observations and always strive to make sure all students exceed or go beyond their potential. I quickly develop positive relations with classes and make lessons fun and enjoyable. I have taken the lead on a ‘Teaching and Learning group’ which supported staff across the school to improve their teaching. I have extensive experience in applying this to 1-2-1 sessions and have been a private tutor now for over 10 years. My quick paced, engaging lessons are driven by activities, are informed by high quality assessment for learning techniques and routinely leaves students feeling positive and confident that they are making progress. Using the language of growth mindset has been a big part of my teaching for some time now. All students are encouraged to embrace the philosophy of… "I cant do it… yet!"
I strongly believe that all students can "do" maths if they have the right context to practise. Maths is a skill and with the correct encouragement and inspiration any student can learn and develop that skill. I have very high expectations of both myself and all students that I teach. I think it is very important to set high standards and believe students should be inspired to develop a robust and tenacious approach to finding solutions to the problems in front of them. Teaching has thus far provided me with a platform to pass on my energy for mathematics (and life) onto others. Giving students the confidence to explore mathematics themselves and realise anything is possible when you work hard has always been at the forefront of my teaching.
