Information About Tom

Personal Description: I am a student who has just started at Oxford and I am trying to pay my way through university. I am offering tutoring up to GCSE in all my A-level subjects, and up to A-level in German, which is part of my degree. I am also in this for the experience - I hope someday to be a teacher - and so I am more than happy to negotiate rates. I try to be enthusiastic and assiduous, and I will do whatever is necessary to help.

Tutoring Experience: I have been in full time education for the past thirteen years, and as such have had rather more experience of teachers and teaching than I would like! I have worked with autistic children before, and in my last year my Upper Sixth German set occasionally helped our teacher with the younger classes. In addition to this, I have been tutoring GCSE German and History and CE Latin to several students of all abilities for about six months now.

Tutoring Approach: My general approach in languages would be an emphasis on a solid understanding of the grammar rather than the trotting out of set phrases, but this obviously depends on the tutee's level, and just how far they want to go in the language. For history and economics I would probably emphasise understanding the mechanics of an argument. However, once again, this all depends on the tutee, and I will do my best to adapt my teaching to their learning style, rather than trying to force them to adopt their learning style to meet my teaching.

From Angela (5/5): (Secondary Latin) Tom gave my son 3 intensive lessons over a 5 day period. His teaching methods are nothing short of fantastic. Thanks to Tom's intensive work Alex's understanding of Latin grammar and structure has come on leaps and bounds and he now has a confidence with Latin translation he did not have before. We are very grateful to Tom for all his efforts, he is a great teacher.

From Caroline (5/5): (Secondary Latin) Tom is doing an excellent job, helping my son in Latin and also in maths. After only a couple of sessions my son has much more confidence and has already been praised by his Latin teacher for his improvement. More importantly my son is really enjoying the sessions with Tom who is keeping him engaged and enthused.

From Joanne (5/5): (Secondary Latin) Tom has spent two mornings helping my son with his Latin. He arrived on time and was very well prepared. According to the pupil himself, the lessons have been really helpful and I was actually thanked for organising them. 'Latin is making sense' he says. Tom pulls no punches in addressing the weak areas of the language, helping my son to understand that at the end of the day, only the student can do the necessary hard work.

From Susan (5/5): (GCSE German) Tom has relatad well to my grandson and he has made real progress in his understanding and knowledge. He was a great find.

My grandson has now taken his German GCSE. I know that without Tom's tuition, he could have taken the attitude that there was no point in him doing the exam. Tom proved himself to be a very able tutor, giving my grandson the confidence and knowledge that enabled him to take the exams; feeling much better prepared. As a retired teacher I recognise in him the skills that make a good teacher. His preparation was well thought out, his relationship with his pupil was friendly, but firm; recognising that my grandson had a negative attitude to the subject, he dealt with this in a sensible way that did not leave him feeling patronised. A very professional approach.

From Jacquie (5/5): (Secondary Latin) Tom was very patient and encouraging. He really helped my son grasp the basics which he was struggling with.
