Information About Thomas

Personal Description: I am a patient, enthusiastic tutor with an excellent professional and academic record. In June 2010 I graduated from University College London with a 1st Class honours degree in Physics. I have been tutoring privately since September 2010, accumulating over 150 hours of experience (Mar 2011). During this time I have taught a variety students of differing abilities, from KS3 tutees studying at Westminster to adults looking to improve their maths.

Tutoring Experience: Sep 2010 – Present: Private Tuition, London

I have experience of tutoring students between the ages of 13 to 16 in KS3, GCSE, AS and A-level. I have experience of tutoring in the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Previous and current students include pupils of Westminster, City of London and Radley. Since September I have accrued over 150 hours of tutoring experience. Previous and current clients include:

Feb 2010 – Present: Andrew P.

Andrew is a student at Radley College whom I provide tuition in Science and Mathematics in the form of short residential placements. Andrew is studying IGCSE Science on Edexcel as well as A level Mathematics on Edexcel.

Jan 2010 – Present: Jack, Joel and James R.

Jack, Joel and James are students at Westminster School whom I provide bi-weekly tuition in Physics. Jack and Joel are aged 13 and 14 respectively and are studying IGCSE Physics on Edexcel. James is studying AS level Physics on OCR (Advancing Physics).

Jan 2010 – Present: Alexander and Leticia R.

Alexander and Leticia are students at Eaton Square School whom I provide weekly tuition in Mathematics. Alexander is aged 13 and is currently preparing for entrance exams for schools including Latymer School and City of London. Leticia is aged 11 and is also preparing for entrance exams.

Sep 2005 – Jul 2007: In-School Tutoring, Cox Green School, Maidenhead

During Sixth Form I ran a successful weekly lunch-time club for GCSE and KS3 students who required extra tuition in mathematics. Through this I gained experience of tutoring to students from the ages of 11 to 16. The club received exceptional feedback from students, teachers and parents, with the majority of students saying that the club helped to improve their grades.

Jul 2006: Voluntary Teaching, St. Bartholomew School, Kenya

With the support of the Kazi Mingi Foundation, I travelled to Kenya to teach Chemistry at St. Bartholomew High School in Voi. I taught classroom lessons to children from the ages 11 to 16, which also involved carrying out practical experiments. This opportunity allowed me to teach children from a radically different cultural and academic background.

Sep 2003 – Jul 2005: Pat Capp School of Swimming, Maidenhead

As an assistant swimming instructor I helped children aged between 5 and 10 to learn to swim. My time at Pat Capp allowed me to develop the patience and communication skills required for teaching young children.

Tutoring Approach: I have a patient, sympathetic and effective approach to tutoring, as well as a real passion for the subject I teach. Every student requires a different method of tutoring, because every student learns differently. My approach is to determine how the student learns most effectively (be it through visual aids, practice questions, note taking etc.), and through patience and enthusiasm, build the student's confidence and aptitude for their subject. Given my experience of teaching a range of subjects for students of differing abilities, I have developed an a comprehensive and successful approach to tutoring.
