Personal Description: Hi, I'm Tom and I'm currently a final year Maths student at the University of Warwick.

Tutoring Experience: I have been a tutor for 3 years, teaching a variety of levels and topics. Earlier this year I was a teaching assistant a first year Maths module.

I also offer the teaching of STEP/AEA style questions/topics/tricks and coaching for Cambridge/Oxford admissions.

Tutoring Approach: The key to being successful at maths is understanding. Many of the subjects covered in GCSE are a formalisation of our intuition (e.g. probability, area, percentages… ), although students will often be able to answer many of these questions when asked in a familiar way, they will usually fall at the first hurdle and give up.
My approach to tutoring is to start at the very basics and move up to remove any kinks in your understanding. You will have a much better chance of success if you thoroughly understand earlier material (e.g. you can go very far at GCSE just by having good numeracy skills). I set weekly homework and expect a hard work ethic from my tutees: there are very few exceptions of people being great at maths without at some-point putting in a substantial effort.

• 2006: A* at GCSE level Maths - State School (School)
