Information About Steve

Personal Description: I am a very patient, well-spoken post-graduate who has a real love for English, Philosophy, and critical thinking/analysis. I’m friendly, highly literate, and understand that each person has a different approach to learning. At college I obtained good A-levels in Computing, English Language & Literature, and Theatre Studies, as well as an AS-level in Law. I graduated from University of Wales, Swansea with a high 2.1 Joint Honours Degree in Philosophy & Politics and was quickly awarded the only post-graduate bursary-funded place available at the university’s Wittgensteinian research department. With this I obtained a Master’s Degree in Wittgensteinian Philosophy, which left me with an especially strong interest in linguistics, aesthetics, ethics, and epistemology.

Tutoring Experience: I have supported younger students through undergraduate studies in English and Philosophy, as well as critical analysis skills and practical exam/essay techniques. Additionally, I have provided non-academic training in various jobs, working with people ranging from complete novices to experienced staff.

Tutoring Approach: I offer a relaxed but productive style of teaching, especially suited to those who are intelligent but find school/college/university to be uninteresting or unsuited to their learning style. I recognise that in many cases the problem does not lie with the student. Anything from a different approach to a problem, to an expanded set of tools for addressing it can change an uninteresting or difficult subject into a fascinating, accessible one. Particularly with the subjects in which I offer tuition, hammering home facts and figures is often the least effective way to pass on information. A deeper grasp of the underlying structure and method of a problem or subject area is far more likely to provide long lasting and significant gains, as well as to translate across to other subject areas.
