Personal Description: In September 2007, I started a teaching course City & Guilds 7303 which will run for approximately 13 weeks. Prior to this I successfully passed my Teaching qualification City and Guilds 7302 and have relevant experience. I have had an excellent education and I am always interested in learning and developing myself. I successfully completed a B.Sc in Allied Medical Sciences in Medical Technology and several other qualifications . I feel this shows the level that I am capable of undertaking. I would be willing and interested to undertake any further training or qualifications. I feel it is important to improve my own practice and keep up to date with any changes and I would always adhere to service standards
I would definitely be sympathetic to the aims and values of your organisation. I am happy to support learning and education to enable other people to develop skills for life both personal and professional. I would always try to remove any barriers that people would have to learning. My knowledge of some of the barriers that people face might be, cost of course, childcare, English as a second language, no family support or encouragement, no previous learning history, cultural issues, i.e. gender of tutor or inappropriate venue or time. The learner would always be at the focus of my work.
I am a friendly, honest and reliable person who is confident and has a positive approach. I am prepared to work hard I enjoy a challenge, it makes it more interesting and rewarding as I get job satisfaction. I have good timekeeping and organisational skills. I am flexible with regards to hours and duties and I have a 'can do' attitude. I get on well with other people as I have a great sense of humour. I am a hardworking and I can work to deadlines and prioritise my work. I have a good education and I am willing to undertake any training necessary to learn new skills. I am able to communicate in both verbal and written English or Arabic as I am fluent in both languages. I can work either as part of a team or on my own. I am able to remain calm at all times even whilst working under pressure. I am familiar with using computers; I have experience of Windows the Internet, Email, Word, Excel. I have used in work for updating and checking patients’ medical records.
I have good ICT skills I am confident using most computer programs such as Microsoft word, the use of email and Internet.
I use a computer to help prepare lessons plans and have used both in work and personally. I have used computers to translate publicity into Arabic using a particular program and a specialised keyboard. I have undertaken a computer course in the past.
Tutoring Experience: My last employment was with the Netherthorpe Upperthorpe Community Alliance, as a Tutor, part time, teaching Arabic Language to Mothers and their children. This was a very large class with on average 45 children and 21 women. It was non-accredited provision and it took place in a community based setting - a Healthy Living Centre. This made it less formal than a classroom in an Educational building. I felt this was also beneficial as it made people familiar with other services that were on offer that they could access where normally they would not use. Teaching Arabic literacy gives skills for life because if people can learn their own language initially then it will help them to understand English better and learn quicker. Community Alliance have asked me to deliver a further course in this subject, which I am currently planning for, and I am awaiting confirmation of the start date.
I adapt myself self to the most appropriate style of teaching. It was important to make people feel relaxed as and make it enjoyable and informal to create an interesting, learning and informal environment but at the same time it was important to lead the group and be focused , especially as there are lots of learners at different ages and levels. It is important to ensure that whilst the lessons were delivered in an informal and relaxed style that the teaching points got across the group to ensure that the learning was of value to the participants . My duties involved doing initial assessment in the first session, preparing work and learning materials for lessons, doing lesson plans, scheme of works, marking work, preparing test papers .
Able to work independently and collaboratively
Delivering the Arabic course mainly involved working independently to prepare, run, monitor and mark the class. However I am able to work as part of a team. Before this course started it was important that I liaised with other agencies to promote the course, support provision with regards to the recruitment and referral of learners working collaboratively. I also assisted directly in the recruitment and enrolment of learners completing relevant forms and completing paperwork for the funders to ensure that payment was received to ensure the continued running of the course.
Able to motivate students and encourage participation
I believe the numbers and regular attendance show that I am able to encourage participation. I actively encourage learners or students to get involved as I believe if they do something themself they get more benefit/reward. It is important to recognise that learners are individuals and can be at different levels or learn at different paces . Some people learn better with particular materials than others. Also people have different attention spans so I try to make it as interesting and encouraging as possible and fun at the same time to motivate people. It is therefore important to assess the learners to enable me to provide the most appropriate learning techniques so I can plan. Following lessons I reviewed the sessions I had delivered and sought feedback good or bad to ensure the learner got the most out of it. I feel that by responding to the needs of the learners I gain more participation from them as they know I will listen to them and not only teach.
Able to design and deliver effective education and training.
I designed the Arabic teaching course for women and children I had to go back to basics and keep things simple and clear. To make it more enjoyable and interesting I bought play dough to use as a teaching tool and both the children and mothers enjoyed it and it encouraged family learning and it gave them ideas of how they could practice at home but also help each other. For all teaching I have done I have designed my own lessons/sessions and courses.
My last sessional tutoring was funded by (NUCA) Netherthorpe Upperthorpe Community Alliance and (ACLU) Adult and Community Learning Unit it required lots of paper work to be completed to provide evidence to the funders of my activities. I kept accurate records of learners, attendance and achievement and I reported on these as required by the service and funding agencies and I am confident with this as I have done this on a regular basis and know its importance. I am able to manage administration tasks as I have past experience of data management; I kept accurate records of learners and their progression. I have used databases in the past to record information, update and produce reports. It is important to keep organised with both paper and computerised documents. Whilst volunteering with Jobnet I completed general administrations tasks such as typing letters, maintaining and updating a database, photocopying and answering the telephone etc.
I have good understanding of the equality and diversity frameworks within which the service operates. I always work to equal opportunities, it is very important that everybody should have access to services. I understand that some people may need additional support and that sometimes it is not possible for one tutor to do this and I would ask to see if any extra resources would be available. When initially setting up a course or any learning it is important to think about equal opportunities for instance, the venue and times to ensure it is accessible to as many people and welcoming and encouraging.
I have worked with men, women, young people and children of all ages, races, and backgrounds, I have never had any issues with regards to equality. Although I have talked in the main about my Arabic teaching I have also worked in a school with students aged 16+, studying A Levels. I also teach a mother and her 2 disabled children , the children have cerebral palsy as they need additional support. I am also a volunteer with SAVTE , an organisation which uses volunteer to teach English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) in their own homes.
I would always be committed to equality and diversity, We all have our own beliefs but we should not force them on other people. We have the right to choices and freedom of speech however I would not accept anybody behaving inappropriately or deliberately discriminating against somebody else, I would challenge this if possible or notify a relevant person.
As shown above I am confident teaching to groups of learners as well as individuals at any age including Adults.
Tutoring Approach: The way of teaching depends on the level the tutee should start with, in general reading , writing, communicating and sometimes translating correctly from and into English are the main objectives. I will explain the concepts and provide an examples as necessary. show some demonstration if possible. Also, I will explain how to solve the problems and let the student solve them. further more, we will try to implement some project that will enrich the understanding.
